Most Important, the Paint Systems We Use
For our metal roofing and siding systems, the two main paint systems we use include advanced coatings like Sherwin-Williams WeatherXL™ and Sherwin-Williams Fluropon™ PVDF.
Sherwin-Williams WeatherXL™: This system is a polyester-based coil coating, designed for enhanced durability and weather resistance. It offers excellent protection against harsh environmental conditions such as UV radiation, extreme temperatures, and moisture, while maintaining color retention and gloss. The WeatherXL system is particularly suited for metal roofing applications where long-term performance is essential.
Sherwin-Williams Fluropon™: A premium fluoropolymer coating, this system uses 70% PVDF (Polyvinylidene Fluoride) resins for superior durability. Fluropon provides exceptional resistance to fading, chalking, and chemical damage, making it ideal for long-lasting finishes in industrial or architectural metal roofing. It’s known for its superior color performance and can withstand extreme climates and pollutants.
Both paint systems are designed to provide robust, long-lasting protection while offering a wide range of colors and finishes to meet aesthetic and functional requirements for metal roofing projects.

Sherwin Williams WeatherXL™ Crinkle Finish
The strength of beauty, and the beauty of strength.
This high-durability European roofing and wall panel material is now being introduced to North America, after customization for our specific coating standard needs. WeatherXL™ Crinkle Finish harnesses breakthrough technology to combine the look of authentic shingles and the durability of modern coatings as well as unique appearances for wall panels. A number of potential applications for this coating are still emerging, but wherever appearance, hardness and durability are important, WeatherXL Crinkle Finish should be a top consideration.
Color and texture
The unique texture redirects light for enhanced visual depth, promising a step-change improvement over flat-panels’ appearance. The coating has been responsively designed, so its subtle shading mirrors the eye’s natural horizontal motion.

Sherwin-Williams Fluropon™ is a high-performance 70% Polyvinylidene Fluoride (PVDF) architectural coating system designed for metal surfaces, particularly for exterior architectural applications like metal roofing, wall panels, and curtain walls. It is known for its excellent durability, color retention, and resistance to harsh environmental conditions. Here’s a more detailed breakdown of its features:
1. Composition:
- 70% PVDF Resin: This fluoropolymer resin is the backbone of Fluropon’s performance, providing superior durability, weatherability, and UV resistance. The remaining 30% consists of other resins and pigments that enhance its flexibility and appearance.
- Pigments: The coating uses inorganic and organic pigments, allowing for a wide range of vibrant and stable colors, including metallic and pearlescent finishes.
- Primer Layer: Fluropon is often applied as a two-coat system (primer + topcoat) or even a three-coat system when special effects like metallics are needed. The primer improves adhesion to the substrate and enhances corrosion resistance.
2. Performance Characteristics:
- UV Resistance: Fluropon’s 70% PVDF formulation ensures excellent protection against fading and chalking from prolonged sun exposure. It maintains color integrity over decades, even in extreme UV conditions.
- Weatherability: This paint system performs well in a variety of climates, including coastal environments where salt and moisture can cause corrosion. It also resists acid rain, pollutants, and other environmental stresses.
- Chemical Resistance: It provides strong resistance to chemicals, making it ideal for urban and industrial locations where pollutants might be an issue.
- Flexibility: Fluropon can handle the expansion and contraction of metal surfaces due to temperature changes without cracking, peeling, or losing adhesion.
- Gloss and Color Retention: It offers a broad range of gloss levels from matte to high gloss, and the color options are highly customizable, with excellent retention over time.
3. Applications:
- Metal Roofing and Wall Panels: Fluropon is widely used on metal architectural elements because of its long-lasting performance.
- Curtain Walls and Window Frames: Its smooth, durable finish makes it a top choice for commercial buildings, stadiums, airports, and other large structures.
- Façades, Louvers, and Sunshades: Its versatility allows architects to design with confidence, knowing the finish will look good and last.
4. Environmental Impact and Sustainability:
- LEED Credits: Fluropon can contribute to LEED points, as the formulation can include cool roofing pigments that improve solar reflectivity and energy efficiency.
- VOC Compliance: It is designed to meet low VOC (volatile organic compounds) regulations, minimizing environmental impact during application.
5. Advantages Over Other Coatings:
- Superior Lifespan: Fluropon offers decades of performance without significant degradation.
- Color Variety: There’s an extensive color palette available, including metallic, mica, and pearlescent finishes, providing aesthetic flexibility.
- Long Warranties: Backed by a Limited Lifetime Warranty.
6. Application Process:
- Fluropon is applied in a coil or extrusion coating process, ensuring a consistent, smooth finish on the metal substrate. This process involves cleaning the metal, applying the primer, and then applying the topcoat (and optional clear coat for extra protection or special effects).
Overall, Fluropon PVDF paint is a premier choice for architectural metal coatings, combining long-term durability, color stability, and environmental resilience. It is ideal for projects requiring a lasting aesthetic and high performance.
